I Need to Return Some Video Tapes...
Disclaimer: If you haven't seen American Psycho and would like to, I would advise you not to read this. It will totally ruin it for you. You have been warned.
I like to dissect girls. Did you know I'm utterly insane?
I watched American Psycho today and I don't get it. Is it all in Patrick Bateman's head or did he really kill people? The fact that he's completely and utterly insane has nothing to do with it. He can be insane in the fact that he fantasies and conjures up these events of killing people in his head or he could be insane in the fact that he actually kills people in real life. Either way, it's not normal.
I think he really did kill those people. The thing that gets me is how throughout the whole movie, he keeps getting mistaken for his other colleagues. Paul Allen thinks Bateman is Marcus Halberstram and his lawyer does even know who he is. The scene with his lawyer just perplexes me. I guess, it's the running theme throughout the film in that everyone is all the same... they are indistinguishable from each other. For example, did his lawyer really have dinner twice in London with Allen? Or is he confusing Allen with someone else and Bateman really did kill him? His murders are getting covered up because no one actually knows who anyone is. The scene in which he is having lunch with the detective, he somehow has an alibi for the night Allen disappeared. His colleagues just assumed Batemen was at Atlantis with them. Everyone is so superficial and too self-absorbed to notice what Bateman is doing. He blatantly confuses to killing people and still, he somehow gets away with it.
No one really listens to him either, which makes me laugh.
Bateman: I don't think we should see each other anymore.
Evelyn: Why? What's wrong?
Bateman: My need to engage in homicidal behavior on a massive scale cannot be corrected, but ah, I have no other way to fulfill my needs.
Evelyn: What about the past?
Bateman: We never really shared one.
Evelyn: You're inhuman.
Bateman: No... I'm in touch with humanity.
Perhaps, I should read the book. Maybe, then I can decide. I need a new movie to watch now. All the movies in the horror section of iTunes are not worthy of my $3. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Super 8? The Machinist?
